Spirulina grower for fifteen years, I have set up a new farm on a lovely one-hectare plot bordered by a river in Les Pennes Mirabeau. Up until now, the farm has been devoted solely to spirulina production, but the aim of this new project is also to give pride of place to plants.
An orchard of some sixty trees has been planted, and will require some care. The hedges are in place, and also require maintenance, as well as the creation of amenity areas.
A family vegetable garden is set up every year. A mini henhouse with 3 chickens provides us with a few fresh eggs
. There's a large 3,000m2 greenhouse that mainly accommodates spirulina production, but also an area that can be dedicated to growing seedlings, and an orangery, or more exotic things! There's a comfortable mobile home under an old oak tree with two bedrooms to accommodate WWOOFers, with water, electricity, heating, toilet and hot shower. And for the moment, rooms in the house are also available. I'm sharing the house with Peter, who is delighted to share time with the woofers too
For the months of April to June
The spirulina season hasn't officially started yet, but it's spring, so there's work to be done in the garden, vegetable patch, fruit trees, watering, and preparing for the new season (cleaning the ponds, getting the equipment ready to start the season). As usual, there's bagging of spirulina packets!
From mid-June, the season begins. You can help in the garden and with the spirulina. I often have an employee at this time of year who handles the actual harvesting, but there's always something else to do: cleaning the ponds early in the morning, bagging, and other tasks. And for WWOOFers who would specifically like to harvest the spirulina, it can sometimes be a bit technical, and I prefer people who commit for a longer period (at least two weeks or more), and then we'll see how it goes in practice. There's always something to do. In the garden, and at home too, we make jams and preserves of vegetables. And for those who love Instagram and other social media, we can try to share information about the farm, because I'm not an expert!
And of course, we'll take the time to cook delicious lunches together!
Les Pennes Mirabeau is a small town to the north of Marseille, so we're almost in urban agriculture, and while the direct surroundings of the farm are pleasant, with a small river running alongside the land where you can swim in summer, and the hills of the Arbois plateau right next door, it's still a close environment to the city. For those woofing a little longer, the idea of having a means of locomotion to enjoy the surrounding area is a comfortable one: the blue coast and its magnificent creeks are a 20-minute drive away, as are Marseille and Aix en Provence.
