International wwoofers welcomed! Come experience the life in a farm of medicinal plants, nested in the wild nature of the southern french alps! Merci par avance pour votre compréhension :) *************************************************************************************************************************** The farm is located in the mountains at 1,200 meters above sea level, nestled in a beautiful wild natural setting in Haute Roya, surrounded by cliffs and forests, along a torrent sprinkled with waterfalls and pools. We have been working for 5 years under the Organic Agriculture label. We generally welcome WWOOFers from April to October. Here, we gather and cultivate medicinal plants and transform them (mother tinctures, essential oils, hydrosol, solarized oils, syrups...). We also grow and process many vegetables for our personal consumption and gather wild berries and edible plants. The farm is also a welcoming and sharing place; we organize and host stays and workshops focused on medicinal and edible plants, as well as wellness and permaculture. The farm is mostly not mechanized, and we work with living soils without plowing. I (Julien) am certified in herbalism from the Lyon School of Medicinal Plants and passionate about ethnobotany; I gladly share my knowledge. For the accommodation of WWOOFers, there is a large Sibley tent with beds, the possibility of individual tents, and a yurt for the colder months (April, May, October). There is also a flat area for parking vans. The farm is equipped with solar showers and dry toilets. We have electricity (with the option to do laundry) and a decent internet connection (Bouygues and SFR). Meals are prepared as much as possible with organic and local products. We follow an omnivorous diet, though we mostly eat vegetarian. Alcohol is not provided for WWOOFers, so please make your own arrangements. I go to the market every week; otherwise, the nearest shops are a 45-minute drive or a 2-hour walk away. Léonie is Dutch and does not yet speak French fluently, so English is the everyday language. We are the happy humans of two adorable dogs. Animals that can live outside in an unfenced area (and are neither aggressive nor prone to wandering!) are welcome. Access to the farm is via a dirt road (45 minutes from St Dalmas de Tende) or byfoot (2 hours from Tende). If you come by train or bus from Nice, Menton, Cuneo or Ventimiglia, you should stop at the Brigue or Tende station, and I will come to pick you up, preferably on Wednesdays and Sundays. The main activities on the farm include: cultivating medicinal plants and a vegetable garden for the farm’s needs, collecting and laying hay, preparing beds, sowing, planting, weeding, numerous harvests..., foraging for wild medicinal and edible plants, distillation, drying, making mother tinctures and cosmetic products, bottling and labeling, beekeeping, eco-construction in wood, planting and grafting fruit trees, processing vegetables and fruits... WWOOFers who join us also actively participate in daily tasks: foraging for meals, preparing food, doing dishes, cleaning their tents, managing their dry toilets, etc. The expected agricultural activities are about 3 to 4 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Each day is different, and we strive to ensure that WWOOFers experience as much as possible during their stay with us. Experience and genuine interest in agriculture, medicinal plants, and/or construction are a plus for us and the farm. The surrounding nature is generous and beautiful, with numerous hikes (Refrei, Lamentargue, Mt Bertrand, Marguareis...). Italy is just over the ridge. The river, fresh and crystal-clear, flows along the farm, perfect for swimming, meditating, or lounging. Basic shops and markets can be found in the villages of Haute Roya. You will discover their charm and the dynamism of their inhabitants. There are many local producers who delight us throughout the year: farmer-bakers, market gardeners, shepherds-cheesemakers, producers of chestnuts, red fruits, apples... The atmosphere is welcoming and sharing, among open-minded, respectful, and attentive adults. We love music, playing cards or dice, singing, dancing, and enjoying life in general! !!! Due to various issues, we want to clarify that we are looking for honest, mentally healthy, motivated, resourceful, and fit individuals, as it is the mountains here. We share our daily lives with care and kindness, and since we are solely responsible, we already have a heavy mental charge, so those struggling with life, undergoing heavy medical treatments, or facing complicated psychological issues are kindly asked to look elsewhere. Likewise, individuals who cannot keep their commitments or confuse WWOOFing with a free vacation are also asked to pass on this opportunity. Thank you in advance for your understanding :)

I had the most amazing two weeks at Castel Tournou! I will miss waking up to the sounds of a waterfall, picking fresh roses in the morning, eating delicious food, and spending time with great hosts. Julien and Leonie are such kind and interesting people, I really enjoyed sharing each meal conversing with them. I completed a wide range of tasks and learned so much about medicinal plants. The farm is incredibly beautiful and natural, I was in awe each day. Julien and Leonie had plenty of hike recommendations, so I spent my free days exploring the mountains and nearby villages. This was a truly unforgettable experience, and I feel lucky to have passed time at Castel Tournou!

The most unforgettable part of my stay was collecting wild plants for salads. Julien patiently explained many different species. Through the way he taught and his continuous curiosity, I could clearly feel his deep love for plants. By my last day, I was able to recognize many of the plants and pick them myself. Even during my days off, I naturally became more interested in wild plants, which made hiking much more enjoyable. Building a handmade fence for peas using hazelnut branches and making kumquat jam were also memorable experiences. Léonie often experimented with new recipes such as syrups, waters, jams, cakes and ketchup, and I was inspired by her creativity and resourcefulness. I had so many experiences and so much learning in just three weeks, more than I can fully put into words. The yurt where I stayed with other WWOOFers was very comfortable, and I loved the self-sufficient lifestyle where almost everything was handmade. I did yoga in the morning in front of the yurt, enjoying the sky, fresh air and sounds of nature. As there wasn't internet access at the yurt, walking to a bunker became my daily routine. It was a beautiful walk surrounded by thyme and rosemary with stunning views of the French Alps. I appreciated the feeling of “being present,” something that is easy to forget in city life. I am grateful for this experience and truly hope to come back again. Merci beaucoup 😊🌿🫶

Thanks Julien & Léonie, for these two amazing weeks at your wonderful farm in the mountains! From the first moment I felt super welcomed, they are really warm and interested people. We did nice and different activities in the garden and with the medicinal plants. The meals were super good, with a lot of homemade food:) And of course, sleeping in the beautiful yurt, having nice conversations and having fun with each other made the whole experience very unique. I would recommend this place to everyone!

I had a wonderful one-month stay at Castel Tournou from July to August with Julien, Léonie, and their lovely dogs, Tsuga and Yuki. I got hands-on experience harvesting flowers, helping with distillation, cutting branches (first time using a chainsaw!), weeding, and packaging & labeling products — a perfect mix of practical farm work and learning about natural aromatherapy. Life on the farm is full of positive, peaceful energy — fresh food straight from the land, sincere conversations around the multi-lingual dining table, plenty of courgettes and spicy dishes, the magic of four seasons in a day, shooting stars, lightning shows like an orchestra, and even jumping into the refreshing waterfall pool! Resting on a bed of fresh lavender during a car ride under blue skies and the fatherly mountains is a memory I’ll never forget. Julien and Léonie are open-minded, kind, and generous teachers. They share their knowledge and approach to life with warmth, joy, and inspiration. Thank you again for your open hearts and for sharing your beautiful life. I wish you all and the farm love and the very best ♥︎
