Alain and Marianne, we are a couple with a child (Max, 18 years old), we are travelers who decided to settle down. Alain did a lot of work on organic farms during his 4 years of cycling around the world from 2012 to 2016. Alain is also a science journalist. Marianne is an agronomist. In 2017, we passed our permaculture CCP and in 2018 we volunteered 4 months at an agro-ecology farm in Auroville, India. We have a lot of knowledge and experience to share. To receive wwoofers is essential; we want our farm to be a place of meeting and sharing. We bought early 2019 a farm of 5 ha (including 1.5 ha of wood) near Valence. We are of course in organic farming. We produce vegetables on 3000 m2. As a woofer, you will share our daily life and you can discover, learn and participate in the activities of the farm. The farm is 3 km from the TGV train station and buses to the city. To move you will need a bike or a car. We are located about 30 minutes by bike (15 minutes by car) from Valence, Romans sur Isère and Ardèche. The chocolate museum of Tain l'hermitage is 25 minutes by car. There are many hikes on the Vercors or even around the farm. On the farm we eat vegetarian. We have room with shower and a campground with 2 caravans for wwoofers. We will share lunch with you and of course we provide the ingredients so that you can cook your other meals. We also have a ping-pong table, hammocks and wifi.

I have mixed feelings about my stay. On the one hand the working hours were clearly structured and communicated, the tasks were varied and interesting and Alain took his time to explain things regarding their agricultural techniques. We started the working day with a little warm up and shared lunch after my working hours which was always tasty and plenty. On the other hand I felt like the hosts were not very interested in me (I think the only thing they know about me is my field of studies and that I'm wwoofing) and the general atmosphere was rather distant and cold, sometimes even stressful for no apparent reason. I understand and respect that hosts, espacially with kids need their privacy and that after a long season one may not have the energy to get to know every person in detail. But as I was the only wwoofer there at the time, this meant that after lunch I spent the rest of the day alone most days and I felt lonely many times. I see no bad intentions from the hosts but I think they just shouldn't have accepted a wwoofer under these circumstances. Maybe my expectations were too high regarding the many positive comments here but just based on the two weeks I spent there I wouldn't come wwoofing again.

My time at La Ferme du Rougequeue was better than I ever could have imagined! I was very nervous as it was my first wwoofing experience, but my nerves quickly disappeared as soon as they welcomed me in. Marianne and Alain are intentional in everything they do, and I brought many of their rituals home with me. Whether it was our morning warm-ups, moments of silence before lunch, sharing music or podcasts during our work, and even translating conversations I missed in French when they didn’t have to, they made me feel included and at home in every way possible. The work became very meditative for me, and I appreciated how much effort they put into explaining the process or working alongside us if we needed assistance. Not only is the nearby Drôme region beautiful to explore, but the diversity of the farm itself. From the moment you arrive, you can tell how much love is poured into their practice, the community they’ve built, and the joy they get in hosting wwoofers to share its magic. I would relive the experience 100 times over if I could!

I had my first wwoofing experience with Marianne and Alain and I could not have expected a better one! They immediately make you feel welcome and home, integrate you into their social life, take time and patience for explaining not only the actual work but also the general functioning of the farm and their methods for creating biodiversity through their farming methods. Marianne and Alain have little rituals like a joint morning warm up, moment of silence before the joint meals and joyful music during work. The activities have been diverse as well: we prepared the plant beds, planted many different vegetables and flowers, harvested, pruned, and helped with the market and school visits. The farm is located in the Plaine de Valence, just next to the beautiful Ardèche region, the Drôme and the Vercors which are very worth it to explore! Thank you so much again Marianne and Alain!
